University of Basrah Organizes Powerlifting Championship with Participation from 13 Colleges

Under the patronage of the President of University of Basrah , Prof. Dr. Muhannad Jawad Kadhum Al-Asadi, the Student Activities Department at University of Basrah , in cooperation with the Iraqi Powerlifting Federation (Basra Branch) and the Panther Club, organized the University of Basrah Powerlifting Championship on Tuesday, November 5, 2025. Thirteen teams representing various colleges within the university participated.

The championship aimed to cultivate a spirit of athletic competition among students and encourage them to engage in physical activities, as well as to discover outstanding young talents in the field of powerlifting.

Dr. Ghassan Al-Bajari, Director of the Student Activities Department, explained that the championship is part of the Ministry's program for student activities for the current academic year and is also part of the university's preparations for participation in the upcoming Iraqi Universities Championship. He noted that the intense competition among the participants revealed a number of new talents at University of Basrah , emphasizing that the students' performance exceeded expectations and showcased promising potential deserving of support and encouragement.  Ziad Kadhum Saber, head of the federation, stated that the championship witnessed a high level of competition, emphasizing that a number of talented players were discovered who are expected to join the national team in the future.

59 kg weight category:
1st place: Ahmed Ihsan / College of Medicine
2nd place: Mohammed Saadoun / College of Administration and Economics
3rd place: Karrar Yousef / College of Nursing

66 kg weight category:
1st place: Ali Abdul-Amir / College of Humanities
2nd place: Karrar Ahmed / College of Arts
3rd place: Muntadhar Hassan / College of Information Technology and Computer Science

74 kg weight category:
1st place: Hussein Mohammed Qasim / College of Physical Education and Sports Science
2nd place: Fahd Ahmed Nasser / College of Pharmacy
3rd place: Hussein Abdul-Khaliq / College of Medicine

83 kg weight category:
1st place: Haider Wissam / College of Medicine
2nd place: Zaidoun Qasim / College of Information Technology
